When your team has numbers (your teams outnumbers the
opposition) it is easy to continue to attack and take ground especially if
it is 5 on 3 or so. What should you do if you have the 3 players?
One of the common mistakes is to continue to attack. This is the
time to play some defense and let your opponents "come to you." When
you are outnumbered as described above 2 of your players are really
playing 1 on 2. The other team can devoted 2 players to each of your
2 players. This is a key advantage for the other team and if you try
to attack you are liking going to be in the "dead box" within seconds of
your attempt to move up the field. This is the time to "cross up,"
hunker down, and play some good old fashion defense. Let your
opponents come to you and dig you out of the cross up. This is
difficult at best for them and you know they have to come and get you.
This is not the time to get lazy and break your cross ups. Cover
each other and don't get antsy and look the wrong way. Breaking the
cross ups will only cost you another player or two so don't do it!
There is no shame in playing the "odds." Don't give the game away -
make them take it! After you even up the odds by taking out two of
the opponents get back to your offense and finish the game. More
than likely your team has already beaten them when they couldn't break
your cross ups!
